About Sassen-Bünsow Land National Park

Sassen-Bünsow Land National Park is located in the central part of Spitsbergen, the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago in Norway. Established in 2003, it encompasses approximately 1,230 square kilometers of Arctic landscape, combining glacier-covered mountains, deep fjords, and tundra plateaus. The park's terrain includes the dramatic Sassen Valley carved by glaciers and rivers, as well as the iconic Bünsow Land mountain massif. The region supports a variety of Arctic fauna such as polar bears, Arctic foxes, Svalbard reindeer, and numerous seabird colonies including pink-footed and Brunnich's guillemots. The plant life is sparse due to harsh climatic conditions but includes mosses, lichens, and Arctic poppies. The park preserves critical habitats for these species and significant geological features. Visitors are attracted to the park for wildlife viewing, especially polar bear safaris by boat along fjords, guided glacier hikes, and photography of the pristine landscapes. Due to the sensitive environment and extreme conditions, most visits are guided or conducted as part of expedition cruises. The park lies within the Norwegian Arctic nature protection framework, with strict regulations ensuring conservation. Historical remnants from early mining and trapping can occasionally be found. Sassen-Bünsow Land National Park offers an opportunity to experience one of the most remote and wild areas of the High Arctic.
